Scientifica Venture Capital Enters the Quantum Technologies Field by Launching Quantum Italy
Scientifica Venture Capital, an innovative venture capital firm that has always invested in science as a driver of economic competitiveness, is reaching out to revolutionary Italian researchers and scientists, providing infrastructure and funding to turn their projects into reality. Today, Scientifica Venture Capital announces a new initiative, Quantum Italia, dedicated to growing and investing in the emerging Italian quantum technology sector.
The selection of ideas will also extend beyond national borders to actively involve Italians residing abroad. “Brain Gain is one of our priorities. We speak with many Italians living abroad, and none of them exclude the possibility of returning. We want to create the ‘right opportunity’ to bring them back to Italy,” said Riccardo D’Alessandri, Managing Partner of Scientifica Venture Capital. And the right opportunity could lie in supporting Italy during this quantum revolution, thanks to the vision and resources of a venture capital firm that has made the forefront of its investments its distinctive trait.
In 2021, a total of $2.5 billion was invested in the quantum computing sector alone, surpassing the total invested in the previous decade. Europe has allocated over 7 billion euros for technology development. In Italy, the National Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data, and Quantum Computing was established in 2022, but the allocated resources (320 million euros over 3 years) are lower compared to other European countries. For example, Germany has allocated 2.65 billion euros between 2018 and 2028, and France has allocated 1.8 billion euros for the period 2020-2026. This highlights the importance of private players’ initiatives in developing a strategically critical technology for our country’s economic competitiveness.
Furthermore, the development of quantum technologies necessitates the creation of platforms that bring together diverse expertise, including financial, mathematical, physical, and computer science knowledge. This is why Scientifica Venture Capital has identified Unitary Fund as an indispensable partner.
With the launch of Quantum Italia, Scientifica Venture Capital announces its partnership with Unitary Fund, a non-profit organization with which it aims to create an open quantum ecosystem. This ecosystem will involve national and international communities to bring forth and support the most innovative quantum technology initiatives.
The expertise and open innovation vocation of Unitary Fund are based on a true quantum technology ecosystem that has been cultivated around itself. It is a system of skill-sharing driven by a “quantum community” composed of young minds with excellent expertise in quantum technology. This community is dedicated to the study of these emerging technologies, acting as a task force of experts that provides financing through microgrants and hackathons, making a decisive contribution to the development of open-source solutions for quantum. “The open-source community plays a crucial role in the development of quantum technologies.
At Unitary Fund, we are excited about the partnership with Scientifica Venture Capital and Quantum Italia to continue growing the ecosystem in Italy and beyond national borders,” said Nathan Shammah, Chief Technology Officer of Unitary Fund.
Scientifica Venture Capital is currently analyzing numerous initiatives in the deal flow, with the aim of closing the first three investments by the end of 2023.
