Private capital shifts focus toward models capable of generating industrial development

The entry of Maurizio Scanavino into Scientifica’s share capital and his appointment as Chairman mark a significant milestone in the company’s development path. This move is not merely an expansion of the shareholder base or the addition of a high-standing managerial profile; it is, above all, a market signal. When private capital looks at deep tech with long-term ambition, it no longer seeks isolated promising stories, but rather credible platforms equipped with governance, infrastructure, proprietary dealflow, and execution capabilities. Scientifica has built its positioning precisely on this ground, defining an industrial platform and shaping its own industry. Scanavino’s entry integrates into this trajectory, helping to further accelerate its development and its ability to operate at scale.

Founded in 2022, the company defines itself as an operational venture capital platform. This model integrates investment, laboratories, an Academy, and a Foundation into a single architecture that reduces fragmentation between research, validation, and capital through a structure that accompanies scientific projects from proof-of-concept to company building and industrial scale. This vision is more akin to an asset-backed platform than a passive investor, differing significantly from traditional venture logic.

In less than four years, the group has built a fund platform structured across multiple vehicles. Following its first generalist deep tech fund, which has already completed 21 investments, Scientifica launched Quantum Italia, the first Italian vehicle entirely dedicated to quantum technologies, developed in partnership with Quantonation and, more recently, the Polo Nazionale di Trasferimento Tecnologico per l’Intelligenza Artificiale e la Cybersecurity. Rather than a single fund, the group has established a multi-vehicle platform capable of allocating capital in a thematic, coordinated, and industrially consistent manner.

The financial component is complemented by a proprietary, distributed infrastructure. In L’Aquila, Scientifica operates over 3,000 square meters of laboratories, expanding to approximately 4,000 when including satellite sites; around this hub, it has built a Lab Approved network of over 85 certified laboratories across 14 regions. This is where the “Capex Zero” model takes shape: start-ups can access labs, equipment, prototyping, and technical support without having to immediately shoulder the burden of infrastructural investment.

For a private investor, this shifts the risk profile: it reduces the initial burn rate, enhances technical validation, and makes the dealflow less exposed to the traditional “technology risk” associated with deep tech start-ups. In a market that increasingly rewards capital efficiency, this is a substantial advantage.

Another distinctive element is the group’s origination capacity; through the AdVenture Program, Scientifica has built a network of over 250 student scouts active across Italian universities. The Scientifica Foundation, the platform’s non-profit arm, engages over 600 students, collaborates with more than 40 universities, and identifies over 400 scientific projects annually, from which the best STEM theses are selected for grant programs and support. The strategic takeaway is clear: Scientifica does not merely buy dealflow from the market; it generates it upstream within the university and research ecosystem, structuring a proprietary pipeline that remains a rare competitive advantage in the Italian landscape.

It is within this trajectory that Maurizio Scanavino’s entry takes place. His appointment as Chairman adds a managerial profile to the platform built on transformation, governance, and executive discipline. A Telecommunications Engineering graduate from the Politecnico di Torino, Scanavino has held increasing managerial responsibilities across consulting firms, the automotive sector at FCA (now Stellantis), media, and sports. These culminated in his appointments as CEO of the GEDI Group, during a phase explicitly focused on accelerating digital transformation and improving profitability, and as CEO of Juventus FC, with a mandate centered on economic sustainability and competitiveness. For Scientifica, in market terms, this means bringing into the control room a leader accustomed to managing complex organizations, with a strong focus on governance and the ability to guide the platform toward increasingly large-scale projects.

“Scientifica has built a platform that is rare in its structure, vision, and execution capabilities. My entry aligns with an already well-defined and rapidly growing path, with the goal of supporting its development and further increasing its clarity for the market, institutions, and industrial partners, while contributing to an expansion plan consistent with the project’s ambition.” – Maurizio Scanavino, Chairman of Scientifica

“We have built Scientifica as a private infrastructure for Italian deep tech: not just a fund, but a platform capable of bridging capital, laboratories, universities, and industrial growth. Maurizio’s entry builds upon solid fundamentals and a clear trajectory, which can now further accelerate in terms of scale and execution capability.” – Riccardo D’Alessandri, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Scientifica

“Science attracts private capital when organized with industrial discipline. This is precisely what Scientifica has focused on since the beginning: creating a credible, clear, and scalable structure. Maurizio’s entry reinforces this positioning and further broadens our ability to engage with investors, corporates, and institutions” – Patrick Leoni Sceti, Co-Founder and General Partner of Scientifica

Viewed from the outside, the implications of this move are very clear. Private capital is beginning to gravitate toward Italian deep tech not when faced with isolated success stories, but when it encounters structured industrial platforms: laboratories, governance, investment verticals, university pipelines, and de-risking capabilities. It is upon this foundation that Scientifica has built its architecture, entirely through private capital.
