PlantBit
PlantBit is an agritech start-up, spin-off of the CNR, that has developed BIORISTOR, a biosensor (organic electrochemical transistor, OECT) capable of continuously monitoring, in real-time, changes in the ionic composition of plant sap

Agriculture is among the socio-economic sectors that will face the most severe consequences of climate change. Today, the need to feed a growing global population while preserving natural resources demands new strategies to increase production while safeguarding the planet’s resources.

A key objective of Agriculture 4.0 is to optimize and enhance the efficiency of water resource usage, considering that agricultural production currently accounts for 70% of the Earth’s available water resources.

The biosensor developed by PlantBit – inserted into the plant stem and connected to an IoT hub that transmits data to an app – detects the onset of water stress and sends a signal to the farmer or operating machinery, indicating when it’s time to irrigate. This allows for a significant reduction in water waste in agricultural production.

Using Bioristor can reduce water usage for irrigation by 40%. Moreover, the system offers unique responsiveness, acting precisely when and where needed and identifying factors that cause significant yield losses.

Bioristor is an innovative technology in the field of precision agriculture and agritech, enabling the direct and accurate acquisition of information on plants’ actual health conditions and needs, including water, nutrients, and phytosanitary requirements.

BIORISTOR’s technology is protected by a worldwide patent – granted under exclusive licence – owned by the CNR and is the result of scientific research carried out at the Institute of Electronic and Magnetic Materials (CNR-IMEM) in Parma.
